The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Salud (our Lady of Health) is the most important church in Pátzcuaro. It was built by order of the first bishop of Michoacan Don Vasco de Quiroga on top of a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center. The church served as the Cathedral until 1850, when that function was moved to Valladolid (now Morelia). This church was designated a basilica in 1924.
The facade of this church has a Neoclassical appearance. The Virgin of Health, the patron saint of the region, is honored here. It is a beautiful image molded in corn cane paste that dates from the XVI century. Don Vasco de Quiroga’s remains are entombed in this church.
Stepping inside the basilica, visitors are greeted by a sense of reverence and tranquility. The interior is adorned with ornate altars, gilded retablos, and magnificent frescoes, all crafted by skilled artisans of the period. The centerpiece of the basilica is the venerated image of Our Lady of Health, to whom the church is dedicated. Pilgrims flock to the basilica to pay homage to this revered Marian figure, seeking solace, healing, and spiritual guidance.
